At Start, we believe the best marketing strategies aren't developed in isolation: they're shaped through conversation, challenge and collaboration. We recently had the opportunity to do just that when hosting one of the expert tables at pro-manchester's Strategy Surgery for Marketers and Makers event, bringing together marketing professionals from across the region to tackle some of the biggest questions facing businesses today.
As delegates rotated between specialist roundtables, we had the opportunity to uncover and explore the real challenges facing businesses in Manchester today, sharing ideas that could be applied practically to deliver impact quickly.
One of the biggest conversations centred on how marketing teams are changing. The traditional choice between hiring in-house or appointing a full-service agency is no longer the only option. Fractional marketers, specialist freelancers and consultants are creating more flexible ways for organisations to access senior expertise.
Several delegates were keen to explore and define these options to assess what could be the right fit for their needs. For example, a fractional marketer becomes part of your business, helping shape strategy and embedding themselves within your team. Consultants, meanwhile, often provide specialist advice to solve a particular challenge or unlock a specific opportunity. For many organisations, the right answer isn't one or the other – it's finding the right blend of expertise for where the business is today.
Unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence dominated many conversations too. One phrase kept resurfacing throughout the morning: "AI is only as good as the people using it." A number of attendees found it very reassuring to keep hearing variations on this theme - it's a reminder that AI isn't a replacement for experience, creativity or strategic judgement. The best results still rely on marketers who know how to ask better questions, interpret outputs critically and apply decades of expertise to quality-control every piece of work.
We also discussed how agencies and businesses should use AI transparently. Clients deserve to understand how AI fits into the creative process. Used responsibly, it enhances the work people do rather than replacing them. Beyond speeding up content production, AI has enormous value as a strategic thinking tool: helping generate ideas; test different approaches; challenge assumptions; and kick-start brainstorming sessions before human expertise takes over.
Perhaps the most thought-provoking discussion of the morning wasn't about technology at all. It was about talent. Many attendees recognised how difficult it can be for young people to break into creative careers, particularly if they don't already have industry connections. As an industry, we have a responsibility to create more accessible routes into marketing and nurture talented young creatives whose potential shouldn't depend on who they know. At Start we’re proud to be proactive in this space, working with mentoring schemes and education partners to make access to creative industries fairer for young people in Greater Manchester.
Events like this remind us that good marketing starts with good strategy. Trends, technology and tools will continue to evolve, support and accelerate our impact, but the organisations that succeed will be those that combine strategic thinking with human insight, curiosity and creativity.
